Overview

Luxor is a city on the east bank of the Nile River in southern Egypt. It’s on the site of ancient Thebes, the pharaohs’ capital at the height of their power, during the 16th–11th centuries B.C. Today’s city surrounds 2 huge, surviving ancient monuments: graceful Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple, a mile north. The royal tombs of the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens are on the river’s west bank.

The Valley of the kings

It contains 63 tombs. The tombs were decorated with scenes from Egyptian mythology. In modern times the valley has become famous because of the discovery of Tutankhamon tomb.

The Temple of Queen Hatshepsut (El Deir El Bahari)

It is considered one of the most beautiful of the royal mortuary temples. Construction of the temple took fifteen years, between the 7th and the 22nd years of her reign.

The Colossi of Memnon

Two monumental statues representing Amenhotep III of the 18th Dynasty of Egypt. The statues depict the seated king on a throne ornamented with imagery of his mother, his wife, the god Hapu, and other symbolic engravings.

Karnak temple

It is located on the northern edge of Luxor’s East Bank. The temple of Karnak is the largest Temple in the World and one of the most sacred sites in ancient Egypt. It contains the best obelisks in Egypt.

Luxor temple

It is located in the city of Luxor on the eastern side of the Nile. Amenhotep III built it in the Middle Kingdom era. At the beginning of the entrance of the temple, there is an obelisk which was created by Ramses II in order to record all that he had accomplished, especially his war victories.
